The Dead Sea is named such because
it is devoid of life due to an extremely high content of
salts and minerals. The therapeutic effects of bathing in
the Dead Sea have been well known for more than 2,000 years.
It is believed that this is due to the presence of magnesium,
potassium and bromide. It is these natural elements which
give the Dead Sea water curative powers.
The Dead Sea is unique compared to other seas and lakes
due to the high concentration of salts. The composition
of the salts is also unique. The Dead Sea contains a considerably
less sodium chloride (compared to normal sea water) and
a higher concentration of magnesium, potassium and calcium
chlorides, and a comparatively high concentration of bromides.
This concentration of minerals may improve, and in some
cases alleviate, serious skin diseases such as eczema and
psoriasis.
Dead
Sea salts are obtained by evaporation and crystallization
of Dead Sea salts from the brines. This process retains
all the mineral elements of the Dead Sea.
